Mainstream Semitic philology derives לְבֵנָה from the root l-b-n 'to be white', the sun-dried clay block named for its pale colour, with cognates in Akkadian libittu, Ugaritic lbnt, Aramaic libnā and Arabic labina; a minority view treats the brick word as a Mesopotamian Wanderwort only secondarily attracted to the colour root. No connection to Shona or any Bantu language is proposed in the literature.
