Mainstream comparative linguistics holds that Christ descends from Old English Crist, a borrowing of Latin Christus, itself from Ancient Greek Khristos "anointed one", a verbal adjective of khriein "to smear with oil", traced to Proto-Indo-European *ghrei- "to rub, smear". The Greek term was coined to render Hebrew mashiah, and no Bantu source is entertained.
