The consensus position

Mainstream comparative linguistics holds Gehenna to be a learned borrowing into English from Late Latin gehenna and Greek geenna, itself from Aramaic gehinnam, contracted from Hebrew ge ben-hinnom "valley of the son of Hinnom", a ravine south of Jerusalem. No connection to Bantu is proposed in the standard literature, and Shona gehena is regarded as a Bible-translation loan from the European forms.
