The etymology of Κέρβερος is unresolved. The most cited proposal links it to Sanskrit śabala "spotted", epithet of Yama's two dogs, from a PIE colour root, but the phonology is widely regarded as unsatisfactory and many scholars treat the name as Pre-Greek substrate with no Indo-European source.
