Mainstream comparative linguistics derives καταβαίνω from the Greek preverb κατά plus βαίνω, the latter from a Proto-Indo-European *-ye/o- present on zero-grade *gʷem- "to step, go", with cognates including Latin veniō, Gothic qiman and Sanskrit gámati. Shona kwenda belongs to the unrelated Niger-Congo family, from Proto-Bantu *-gend-, and no genetic connection between the two is recognised.
